One of the most fun ways to plan a party is to focus on one big idea that reminds everyone of the person you’re celebrating. Here’s an example of a One Big Idea party our team threw at our studio .

When we were celebrating our friend and colleague Jemme, everyone immediately thought of the signature red lipstick that she always wears—and it was as simple as that: the Red Lip Party.

The Red Lip Party is perfect for Valentine’s Day, a bachelorette party, or an anniversary (or, a birthday, of course!). It’s the One Big Idea you can use as the theme to celebrate someone who loves a bold lip, and loves to celebrate.

Or, you might consider their characteristics or signature style, like Jemme’s love of bright red lipstick, which she wears almost daily.

With red lips as our One Big Idea, the rest of the party planning became easy! We had an immediate color palette: Red! A confetti shape was easy, too: I drew some red lips, which we copied and cut out to scatter on the table. The rest of the table was filled with red flowers and red lip-shaped candies, and in the center was the portrait I drew of Jemme (in her outfit of day, naturally) and a cake topped with kiss-themed speech bubbles (mwah!).

The red lips also became cake toppers, along with the speech bubbles (find a printable template to make bubbles of your own here):

We scattered the gummy red lips on the table, with the paper red lips and used the rest as a cocktail garnish, sticking one right onto the rim of each champagne flute.

Since I always love when things can work double-duty, the bottle of rosé doubled as decor—I took a red paint pen and drew red lips all over it. (Decorating a wine bottle turns it into a fun keepsake whatever the occasion, whether it’s a birthday, an engagement, or Thanksgiving.)

We also made a kiss-covered crown for the birthday queen, which is an easy and fun special touch that means you can cover someone in kisses without getting right up in their face. (Click here for a how-to.)

What did the birthday girl think? Her One Big Idea party put a big smile on those red lips!
